1 Tim. 6:6-12, 'Godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this
world and… can carry nothing out. Having food and clothing, [necessities,] with these we
shall be content. But those who desire to be rich, fall into temptation and a snare, and into
many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love
of money is A root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their
greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. But… FLEE these things
and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. Fight the good fight of
faith, lay hold on eternal life...’
“Let each one GIVE [willingly and freely] as he has made up his own mind and purposed
in his own heart, not grudgingly or of necessity, reluctantly or sorrowfully or under
compulsion…” 2 Cor. 9:7, Spirit Filled and Amplified Bible.
YET, Benny Hinn openly ‘sells’ ‘God’s’ blessing: “Use your credit cards to pay $1,000 in
offerings! The blessing will last only 2 minutes and will create 500 churchgoing millionaires
or even billionaires!” [Coca-Cola Dome, Randburg, S.A.]
Jesus’ Believers ‘Give As They Purpose In Their OWN Hearts:’
The aim of this article is not to turn believers into greedy graspers, but to free New
Testament believers, who are staggering under the yoke of unscriptural, legalistic,
ceremonial laws: Gal. 5:1.
To give freely, “AS WE PURPOSE IN OUR HEARTS,” or as the Holy Spirit leads us, is
part of every believer’s life in Christ, (2 Cor. 9:7!) But Jesus does NOT compel His
believers to ‘tithe,’ or to ‘give until it hurts,’ etc.!
However, our offerings, which provide for those in real need, are love in deed and truth.
This kind of charity is agapë – a requirement of the Moral or Royal Law of Love towards
our fellow man. For as long as believers live on earth, God’s Moral Law of Love will
remain unchangeable: (Jam. 1:14-20; Mt. 28:20b.)
The old, (outward, ceremonial, ritual, or) Old Testament Law, which pertained to the old
temple dispensation, as we know, is quite another matter. During the New Testament
dispensation, Jesus became the “Mediator of a better (New) covenant… for if that First
(Old Testament) covenant was faultless, then no place would Have been found for a second
covenant… In that He says, ‘A New Covenant,’ He has made the first obsolete. Now what
has become obsolete and old is ready to vanish away,” (Heb. 8:6-13.)
The Old Testament, Ceremonial Law commanded Old Israel to pay tithes, (plural), while
the Old Testament principle of giving alms was agapë, (Godly love,) and part of the Moral
Law of love. In reality, Old Israel was supposed to remain a Theocracy, or a chosen, God-
ruled people. God Himself was their God and King first. Consequently, Old Israel’s tithing
was actually their Theocratic taxes, (as God ruled them through the Levitical priesthood,)
and part of Old Israel’s outward, Ceremonial, or Ritual Law. God’s Old Testament
government, (the priesthood of the Old Testament temple,) were suppose to use these tithes
or taxes to govern His Theocracy, and to fulfil His Ceremonial Law in the physical temple.
The tithes of Old Israel amounted to about 30% of each Jew’s income: 10% for the upkeep
of the Levitical priests, the leaders of God’s old ‘church’ or temple, (which was also His
Theocratic parliament); 10% to support the national feasts and about 10% for charity,
(Old Israel’s ‘welfare fund.’)
To cheat with the tithes was to rob God, [their King and Government], of His taxes. To steal
is a transgression of the Moral Law. Committing tax evasion against God, their Direct
Government, was a serious offence. The Law prescribed that any transgression of its
statutes would bring Old Israel under the entire cursed state or cursed position of Deut. 28.
The context of the much abused Mal. 3 is Mal. 2:
God was admonishing His backslidden PRIESTLY PARLIAMENT when He said in Mal. 2,
“I will send the curse upon you and curse your blessings… For a priests lips should guard
and keep pure the knowledge of My Law, and the people should seek instruction at his
mouth… But you have turned aside out of the way; you have caused many to stumble by
your [false, twisted] instruction in the Law; you have corrupted My covenant with the
people… [The leaders perverted God’s truth and made it into manmade doctrines to profit
themselves.] You do this with double guilt, covering My altar with tears, shed by your
wives, whom you divorced that you might take heathen wives, and with your crying out
because I do not regard your offering any more… Yet you ask: Why does He reject it?”
The false doctrines, idolatry, greed, adultery and sexual perversion of this backslidden, Old
Testament, PRIESTLY GOVERNMENT is the context of Mal. 3:8-9, where God earnestly
warned, “Will a man rob God? Wherein? In tithes and offerings. [My government taxes
and supplement charity for the poor.] You are cursed with a curse…”
The corrupted Old Testament, parliamentary priesthood were the ones who were misusing
and squandering God’s taxes. They were the ones defrauding their King - even robbing
Him of His alms, which they collected from the citizens of Old Israel, but neglected to
distribute among the poor. Yet the weightier of their sin was their blatant disregard of
God’s Royal Law of agapaö (love for God,) and agape, (love for people.) They have leapt
into perversion of the Holy Scriptures; idolatry, disobedience, adultery, divorce and
robbery, but they were still asking: ‘Lord, why do You reject our offerings?’ – Mal. 2.
Their deliberate transgression of the Moral and Ceremonial Law brought them under the
entire curse of Deut. 28, which is why God cursed these religious leaders “with a curse.”
God was NOT addressing blessed, New Testament believers:
By confusing and fusing the Old and New Testaments, which are two different
dispensations, wolves in sheep’s clothing have indoctrinated Jesus’ blood-bought, New
Testament disciples to believe that they should pay the tithes or taxes of Old Israel to ‘earn’
blessing from God. Otherwise, according to this blatant lie, God ‘curses them with a curse’:
Gal. 2:21.
It is an unchangeable fact, as Paul explained in Gal. 3:10-14, that New Testament believers
already live in a state or position of blessedness through their faith in, and acceptance of
the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus Himself ‘became a curse’ so that His sincere believers could
‘inherit all the blessings of Abraham.’
Sincere believers are born again from a state of damnation and cursedness, into this
position of salvation and blessedness in Christ. Thus they ‘inherit’ the entire state or
position of blessedness which the old patriarch of faith in God, Abraham, had enjoyed in
As the entire old, ceremonial law pertained to a completely different dispensation, (the Old
Testament temple-era which Jesus came to fulfil, annul and destroy,) the old prophet
Malachi was not speaking to New Testament, blessed believers in Christ, (Gal. 3:10-14.)
The Old and the New Covenants or Testaments will forever remain two completely
different dispensations.
Jesus never commanded tithing:
Jesus never commanded New Testament believers to adhere to the Ceremonial Law of
tithing, as New Testament ‘tithing’ cannot rescue fallen humankind from their desperate
position under the curse of the Law, (Gal. chapters 2 & 3.) In the same way Jesus never
commanded that animals must be sacrificed to atone for sin, as believers of the New
Covenant live under an entirely different dispensation from that of the Old Testament
If the clergy chooses to keep one law, (tithing,) to ‘earn’ blessing from God, they must keep
the entire Ceremonial or Ritual Law, and thereby proclaim that they do not need the Lord
Jesus and His complete atonement.
They then actually reject the grace of God in Christ – Gal. 3:10-14; Gal. 2:21.
The only New Testament Law which Jesus and His disciples ever commanded was the
Moral Law of Love for God and fellow man, which naturally relates to offerings, but never
mentions tithing – accept in the view of those who abuse Scripture non-contextually to
reinforce their manmade dogmas of greed, (Mt. 22:37-40; 2 Cor. 9:7; Rom. 8:14.)
Believers already pay personal taxes, sales taxes, petrol-, toll-, property taxes, etc.
Governmental taxes are compulsory, (as were the tithes of Old Israel,) because they pertain
to our physical life on earth, and governments are responsible before God to use these taxes
to govern the country’s secular structures and welfare services, (1 Pet. 2:13-14; Mt. 22:21.)
God certainly does not expect us to pay the taxes of Old Israel as well!
God did NOT give these Mammon-worshipping impostors a New Testament tithing-
The abuse, misuse, and twisting of God’s Word is an abominable sin! Jesus annulled the
entire physical, Old Testament temple with its Levitical priesthood at Calvary, and sincere
believers, indwelt by the Holy Spirit, became the spiritual New Testament temple of God, (1
Cor. 3:16; 6:19.) Thus “there was a need for a [spiritual,] New [Testament] priesthood, for
there should rise another High Priest, [Jesus,] according to the Order of Melchizedek, and
not according to the order of Aaron, [the Old Testament priesthood.] For the priesthood
being changed, of necessity there is also a change of the [temple] law…” (Heb. 7:11-12.) For
Jesus Christ “has redeemed us [every sincere believer in Christ] to God by His blood out of
every tribe, tongue, people and nation, and have made us [spiritual] kings and priests to
our God,” (Rev. 5:9-10.)
Yet the New Testament church clergy claims the financial support of the Levitical, priestly
government of Old Israel, who ministered in the physical Old Testament temple. This
counterfeit ‘priesthood’ actually insists that they have the ‘legal right’ to 10% of every
believer’s income, as well as very generous offerings, in order to keep their luxurious
lifestyles and elaborate church buildings. While they teach their members “to give until it
hurts”, the entire Old Testament concept of the physical temple, physical altar and
hierarchical, Levitical priesthood, were totally done away with in Jesus Christ, (Gal. 3:10-
14; 1 Pet. 2:9-10.) God does NOT dwell in “temples made with human hands, as the
prophet says: Heaven is My throne, and earth is My footstool, what house will you build for
Me? Says the Lord,” (Acts 7:48-49.)
And so Paul, one of these so-called ‘elders’ of the New Testament ‘clergy,’ clearly wrote,
“We did not eat anyone’s bread without paying for it, but with toil and struggle we worked
night and day, that we might not be a burden or impose on any of you.” He continued in 2
Ths. 3:7-12. “Not because we [‘elders’] do not have a right to such support, but we wished
to make ourselves an example for you to follow. For we gave you this charge: If anyone,
[‘ministers, priests, or pastors’ included], will not work, neither let him eat…”
“Yes, but Abraham tithed to Melchizedek:”
Many abusers of the Old Testament Law twist the meaning of Heb. 7:4-5 in an attempt to
sustain their legalistic tithing as a New Testament commandment.
When we look at this passage in context, however, we find in it a much deeper meaning
than ‘tithing,’ which greedy, legalistic minds easily ignore. Jesus, or Melchizedek,
represents the New Order of spiritual priests, and the emphasis of Heb. 7 is on JESUS
and His ministry, not on legalistic tithing. “Now observe how great a Personage this
Melchizedek was, to Whom Abram the patriarch, [of the Old Testament], gave a tenth of
the topmost or the pick of the heap of the spoils.”
The footnote of the SPIRIT FILLED BIBLE explains this much abused and misinterpreted
passage quite satisfactorily, “In Gen. 14 Abram responds to [Jesus’] office, generosity and
blessing by giving Him a tenth of all the spoils that he gathered in the recent war.” And to the
king of Sodom, who shared their banquet, Abram said: ‘I will not take a thread or a
shoelace or anything that is yours, lest you should say, I have made Abram rich. Take all
except only what my men have eaten and the share of my allies who went to war with me.’
“This is one of the most important chapters in the Old Testament as it depicts the
establishment of the Abrahamic Covenant,” [the New Covenant, ultimately fulfilled in
Christ, which includes all New Testament, Jewish and Gentile believers.] “Abraham
represented Old Israel, [and the Dual, Old Testament Law; the Moral and Ceremonial Law,]
when he paid tithes to Melchizedek.”
Note that this was not a tenth of Abrams earnings, which he had to wrest from the earth.
This was a spoil of war, which represented his gratitude for God’s victory over his enemies -
and it foreshadowed the victory of Christ over Satan.
This passage distinguishes Abram not only as our patriarch of faith, but also as a mighty
man of war, who fought against his enemies in the same way that New Testament believers
fight and stand against the entities of darkness - solely dependant upon God and His
provision, living a grateful life of obedience in Him: 2 Cor. 10:4-6.
Footnote, SPIRIT FILLED BIBLE, Heb. 7: “Melchizedek emphasizes the inauguration of a
new priestly order. Another priesthood or totally different order now supersedes the old,
Levitical priesthood. The first covenant, [with its Ceremonial Law and its decree of tithing],
proved weak and useless in providing either full access to God’s presence or full fitness for
His company, [or blessing]! Therefore, it had to be annulled and a new and better hope
introduced to succeed where it had failed.
Jesus’ [spiritual priesthood of believers] supersedes Aaron’s as His was established by
God’s solemn oath. Total salvation demands a perfect High Priest and a perfect sacrifice
for sins – which attention to the Law could not accomplish: Heb. 7:28. The work of
Melchizedek is so superior to the ministry of the Jewish priests that, by it, the old system
was done away and replaced by the absolute, eternal, and perfect priesthood of Christ.
Jesus’ ministry is performed in the true sanctuary, not on earth, but of heaven.
“The ministry of the old tabernacle, [with its continual Ceremonial Law], was only a
symbol of the realities accomplished by Christ. Therefore, His ministry surpasses that of
the Levitical priesthood as substance surpasses shadow: Heb. 8:5-7. His ministry is
performed under the Covenant of Grace, wrought within the mind and hearts of believers
by the power of the Spirit.
“Thus, God established a new personal covenant-relationship with His people, based not on
a compelling, [religious] force from without, [which forces believers to adhere to some of
the decrees of the Ceremonial Law such as tithing], but an impelling power from within,”
[wrought by the Holy Spirit and the Royal
Law of Love written on the heart of every real believer: Heb. 8:10.]
Giving, not tithing:
The Old Testament Mal. 3 is definitely not a tithing mandate to extort money from even
poor believers in order to keep an unbiblical, hierarchical clergy in luxury, (Acts 2:44-45.)
Paul taught New Testament believers in 2 Cor. 9:7 that the main principle of agapë or
Godly love is to give willingly for the support of believers in need. Note that the context of 2
Cor. 9:7 is not Malachi 3, as nearly all religious leaders teach. The context is the heading of
2 Cor. 8 – ‘THE OFFERING FOR POOR BELIEVERS:’ “Let each one give as he has
made up his own mind and purposed in his own heart, not reluctantly or sorrowfully or
under compulsion…”
The Lord Jesus has commanded every believer to sacrifice spiritually unto God all that he
or she is, and all that they have, (Mt. 16:24-26.) This means that everything – our spirit,
soul, body, life, thoughts and priorities – our complete obedience, (which proves our faith,)
as well as our finances, must be wholly sacrificed on God’s spiritual altar. This is agapaö-
love for God and the genuine act of worship, according to Rom. 12:1-2.
The misuse and mismanagement of ‘tithes:’
Even those who recognize the mismanagement of their ‘tithes’ and offerings were
indoctrinated to believe that they should keep on ‘tithing,’ no matter what. Even if they
know that their rulers are squandering their hard-earned money, they were brainwashed
into believing that these leaders are accountable to God; therefore the squandering and
misuse of their money has nothing to do with them, the givers! These deluded givers do not
realise that God will not, in any way, bless the exploitation of His Holy Word, (Rev. 22:18-
19.) God really curses the false ‘leaders’ who twist, abuse and use His Word to bring His
blood-bought souls into bondage.
Paul lamented in Gal. 1:6-10, “I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him Who
called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another, but there are
some who trouble you and want to pervert the Gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel
from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached, let him be
ACCURSED… For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I
still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ.”
To pay our taxes is a physical law of the land and therefore it is compulsory. If and when
government officials squander and mismanage our taxes, we can safely allow God to be
God in this matter. However, when believers are subjected to the abuse of God’s Word
through false doctrines and false spiritual authority, they must realise that they are NOT
submitting to God. In reality they are submitting to wolves in sheep’s clothing and to the
lying father of these leaders, the devil – which is active idolatry! (Mt. 7:15-16; 2 Cor. 6:14-
18; Jn. 8:44; 1 Cor. 10:14-21.)
It is a Scriptural fact that God can and will hold us responsible for supporting such blatant
sin through our emotional , physical and financial support, (Rom. 1:32; Mal. 2 & 3!) David
Wilkerson wrote in ‘SET THE TRUMPET TO THY MOUTH, p. 199,’ “Christians, wake
up! How can any true lover of Jesus support these great abominations? You who send
money to build buildings and projects that have nothing to do with repentance and
[spiritual] revival are partakers in these men’s sins. You, too, will be judged with them. In
the name of all that is pure and righteous, stop! Not another dollar! They could not build
their abominations, [man-made, unscriptural, physical churches, Acts 7:47-49], if God’s
people had discernment and quit supporting them.” Yes, to give freely to support truly
God-called, servant-leaders and those in real need is a New Testament principle of God.
But it is not a law that buys blessing from God. Giving simply from the heart as the Holy
Spirit leads us proves our attitude towards God and our fellow man – our agapaö (love for
God,) and agapë, (love for our fellow man.) Obedience to the Scriptural principal of giving
abundantly, do not diminish our responsibility to spend the money which God had
entrusted to us wisely and with discretion: 2 Ths. 3:10; Col. 4:5; Ps. 112:5; Mt. 5:23-24;
Above all believers are commanded to live and give as, where and how the Holy Spirit leads
them. False doctrines such as New Testament ‘tithing in order to earn the blessing of God’
were instituted to control believers through fear, and to bring them back under the yoke of
legalism: Rom. 8:14; 2 Cor. 9:7: Gal. 5:1.
The ‘seed-faith’ principle:
Old Testament tithing is not the seed-faith principle of the prosperity preachers either, as
NT believers already live in a state or position of blessedness, simply because they are in
Christ: Gal. 3:10.
God commanded Old Israel in Deut. 26:2: “You shall take some of the first of all the
produce of your harvest… and say: I give thanks… to the Lord…” The first fruits of our
lives represent the very best that we have received from God and the very best that we can
offer to Him. In Gen. 49:3 Jacob said: “Reuben, you are my firstborn… the first fruits of
my manly strength…”
The first fruits always pertain to the Law of Love, as Jesus illustrated in Lu. 14:12-14:
“When you give a dinner, do not invite your friends, relatives or wealthy neighbours, lest
they also invite you in return, and so you are paid back. But when you give a banquet,
invite the poor, the disabled, the lame and the blind. Then you will be blessed, [you will
honour God,] as they have no way of repaying you...”
Seen in context, our first fruits do not merely pertain to a tenth of our money, (Acts 4:32-
35.) Offering our love to God, which will manifest in our love for our fellow man, are our
first fruits. If we sacrifice our entire life and all that God had entrusted to us, we bring our
first fruit to glorify His Name. Dedicating our time and talents to His service, and rearing
our children according to His holy decree, are our first fruits on Gods Altar of Mercy.
Concerning this great deception, witchcraft, and abuse against God; His Word, and the blood-
bought body of Christ, the Word of the Living God clearly commands, “COME OUT OF HER,
2 John v. 9-11 commands, “Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the [true teachings of
Christ,] does not have God. He who abides in the [truth] of Christ has both the Father and the
Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring THIS [truth,] do not receive him into your
house nor greet him; for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds.”
Eccl. 7:14, “In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: Surely
God has appointed the one as well as the other, so that man can find out nothing that will
come after him.”
“God has permitted life to consist of both good and evil so that man cannot independently
determine what the future holds for him. This then is an indirect warning to those who
consider [physical] prosperity as a sure mark of God’s blessing and poverty as God’s
curse” - footnote from the Spirit Filled Bible, (the Pentecostal/Charismatic endorsed Bible.)
How consistently is God’s WORD throughout the WHOLE CONTEXT of Scripture!
Time and again, reading the Bible in context, those who seek after His TRUTH, find that
God Himself REFUTES the evil prosperity teaching, based on greed and the twisting of
God’s Word!
Tithing has NEVER, and will NEVER bless any NEW TESTAMENT believer. The N.T. is a
completely different Gospel and COVENANT from the Old Testament. READ GAL. 3:10-
14 – read the whole Bible. Believe GOD, not wolves in sheep’s clothing!
