200 ACRES OF TIMBER DESTROYED BY FIRE
IN EAST MIDDLEBURY
! May 13, 1921 - the rain last night extinguished a forest fire that had for
a time threaten East Middlebury Village and
destroyed more than 200 acres of
Timberland. The men and many of the
women of the village fought the flames from
noon, when they were discovered until
nightfall. The members of the fire
department from Middlebury assisted in the
combat. The fire started in the rear of the
Jerry Hunt place on Plains road in Salisbury.
In a short time the wind had pushed it
toward the mountain. At one time it
seriously menaced the Mrs. Rice home.
Back-firing saved the house when the
flames had approached within 75 yards. At
6 o'clock the fire had reached the mountain
road across which vigilant patrols kept it
from passing."
! Some of the East Middlebury citizens
expressed the opinion that the fire was the
work of an incendiary who desired a better
berry crop in the summer. Similar fires have
been set for the same purpose before, they
said. Among the land owners whose
property was in the path of the flames are
Arthur Douglas, Arthur Bradley, Mrs. Poley
