What is an online game?
An online game is an entertainment activity played via local computer networks or via internet. To be able to
play an online game the player needs to have an active internet connection with a reasonably good speed.
Usually online games refers to games where multiple players are playing the same game over internet
connection on their own devices, all over the globe, in different locations, separated by international borders.
Online gaming may also mean gambling in an online casino or poker room by players using online payment
methods.
To be able to play online games, specific hardware is required, which need to be attached to the internet, such
as, Xbox, consoles, joy sticks, mobile devices, play stations, electronic keyboards and many others.
In addition to the gaming hardware, online games require the specific software for that particular game which
contains
instructions for the
selected game. It is
usually available
on a CD, DVD or
through a simple
download from the
internet or online
stores.
The online games,
sometimes referred
to as video games
may be developed
by individuals or
big corporate
houses. These are
than advertised
and sold to
individual buyers or
to corporate buyers depending on the genre of the game.
These games are hosted on a servers which needs to be managed by the game developer individuals or the
company. Theses servers are usually hired by the game developer and the owner of the server takes on the
responsibility to manage the hosting of games on his server.
The online games are primarily developed for fun and entertainment. Initially the online gaming started as a
fun activity, used for relaxation. Slowly the games have developed into multimillion dollars industry where high
stakes are involved.
Sometimes the games are free, but usually the player needs buy the game. There are a variety of ways by which
