Review of Open Source Requirement Engineering Tools

Abstract:
Requirement engineering phase of software development deals with process of eliciting,
elaborating, analysing, reviewing, prioritizing, specifying with different format and
managing system’s functional and non functional requirements. To manage all the phases of
RE effectively, an interactive, web based RE tool is needed. In this paper, based on certain
categories different open source RE tools has been reviewed. It is observed that very few
tools support non functional requirements and few tools are not having GUI support also.

I. Introduction:
The Requirement Engineering (RE) phase is complex, crucial and comprehensive phase in
the software development life cycle. There are various phases of RE which takes care of
continuous process of requirement elicitation, elaboration, prioritization, analysis,
specification and management thought the software development.
As per the IEEE Definition (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, 1990),
requirement engineering is defined as (1) The process of studying user needs to arrive at a
definition of system, hardware, or software requirements. (2) The process of studying and
refining system, hardware or software requirements.
The continuous phases of RE includes different process which begins by gathering and
eliciting requirements from customers and then specifying requirements in different formats
as shown in Fig.1. The management of specified requirements is carried out depends on the
change of the customer needs and demands.
