ABSTRACT
Fishing sector is a principal source of livelihood for a large section of the economically less
privileged rural coastal population of India. The marine fishing sub-sector accounts for
approximately one percent of national Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This paper is an
attempt to identify the problems of fishermen of Gujarat in getting credit from various formal
and informal sources across different occupation categories i.e. traditional, motorised and
mechanized fishing. It also identifies the problems faced by fishermen in availing benefits of
various government schemes. It is found that inability to offer collateral securities is the main
problem encountered by fishermen while getting credit from formal sources across all the
categories. While getting credit from informal sources, exploitation by fish traders is the
main problem faced by fishermen in motorised and mechanised fishing categories whereas
loss of reputation and broken relationship with friends and relatives in case of non repayment
