Women Domestic Workers in an urban setting : A case study of Surat city

Abstract
There has been a remarkable increase in the number of female domestic workers not only in
India but also all over the world. 'Domestic work' has presently become a significant part of
the unorganized sector and also as an important occupation especially for the females. Due to
constant migration of people from the rural areas of India to the urban centers, the number of
female domestic workers has been constantly increasing as a part of the unorganized sector
of the urban areas. However, compared to other occupation, domestic work has received not
only unrecognized but also unrewarding. The present study attempts to add to the existing
literature on the conditions condition domestic workers, on the basis of data collected from a
sample in Surat city, discusses various social and economic characteristics of the respondents
and attempts to establish relationship between some of the characteristics., and also make
some useful suggestions.

Introduction
Domestic work is one of the oldest and most important informal occupations around the
world. Domestic workers comprise a significant part of the global workforce in informal
employment and are among the most vulnerable groups of workers. Domestic work is an
economic activity in which a person performs various activities in the households other than
