Abstract:
The role of business enterprise is changing in recent times. It is expected that the business
enterprise contribute their resources for development of the society as well along with its
members. It is envisioned that they undertake their social responsibility also. (Philip Kotler and
Nancy Lee, 2005) Corporate social responsibility can be defined as a commitment to improve
community well-being through discretionary business practices and contributions of
corporate resources. Prior to 1-4-2014, it was voluntary for the companies in India to
undertake CSR projects. The CSR activities were undertaken by the enterprises even then but
the amount expended on it were not disclosed. Understanding the importance of disclosure
requirements in this area, CSR was made mandatory for the selected enterprises. The
provisions relating to compulsory CSR are contained in Section 135 of the Indian Companies
Act, 2013. Schedule VII to the Companies Act provide the areas in which the CSR
expenditure is to be undertaken. The activities in which the enterprises are required to expend
