Abstract
The sugar industry of Gujarat forms a major part of the sugar industry in India. It is a part of
agro-based industries in the country and contributes a significant portion to the GDP (Gross
Domestic Product) of the country. So far as sugar industry in Gujarat is concerned; it is the
policy of the State Government that it is to be developed only in the co-operative sector. In the
state, there were only 2 sugar factories in the year 1960-61. Now, its number has gone up to 23
and all are co-operative sugar factories. These co-operative sugar factories have got different
crushing capacities ranging from 1250 TCD to 10,000 TCD. This variation in the crushing
capacity has a significant economic impact.

The South Gujarat is pre-dominant sugar producing
region in the state, having remarkable growth and good performance of the sugar industry in the
state. It plays a dominant role in bringing about major structural changes in the Indian sugar
industry. The continuously increasing trend has been observed in area and production of
sugarcane in Gujarat. This research paper deals with the growth of sugar industry in the co-
operative sector in context to South Gujarat. The paper derive important factors which
responsible for establishment of sugar co-operatives as well also focuses on profile of the
selected sugar co-operatives in the South Gujarat region.

Introduction
A continuous progress has been observed in co-operative sugar factories in Gujarat. The co-
operative sugar factories have enabled the country in becoming not only self-sufficient in sugar
requirement but also contribute to the world market. Gujarat is considered to be one of the
leading states in India in the co-operative sugar factories and South Gujarat is recognized as the
most important centre of successful sugar co-operatives. In 1960-61, sugarcane was cultivated
only in 0.26 lakh hectares (Indian Sugar May 1983). It has now increased to 1.60 lakh hectares in
2015-16 along with production from 13.30 lakh tons to 122.10 lakh tons with productivity of
72.21 per hectare.
