Activity 1
Counting by Getting the Mass of an Object
Objectives:
ct.
Materials Needed:
25 pieces paper clips of the same size and kind
Platform balance (preferably with 0.01 precision)
Procedure:
1. Measure and record the mass of 25 pieces paper clip using the platform
balance. Divide the mass obtained by 25 to find the average mass of
one paper clip.
Perform three trials.
2. Get a handful of paper clips and measure their mass. Compute for the
number of paper clips using your data from step #1. Be sure to do it through
computation and not by counting.
3. This time, count the number of paper clips in the handful of paper clips in step
#2.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 by getting a different handful of paper clips. Record
your answer on Table 2.
Questions:
Q1. Is the number of paper clips in step 2 the same as the number of paper clips
in step 3? Why do you think so?
Q2. Having an experience in counting by getting the mass, give some ways in
which you can apply this procedure in daily life situations.
